We have been informed of the death of Leonard Hedgecock, ex-S/Sgt 3 Flt B Sdn.
Len Hedgecock joined the Regiment from the Royal Signals. He was crewed with Sgt C J Jackson (also ex-Signals) for Op Tonga; they flew Horsa Chalk Number 36, carrying men of 5th Parachute Brigade with a jeep and trailer. They landed safely on LZ ‘N’ at 0327 and joined their comrades in an orchard, where they received some attention from the Germans via mortar bombs; however, they remained unscathed and returned home the next day.
The two pilots were again crewed together on Op Market.They were in Horsa Chalk Number 863 and their load were men from 2 Battery, 1st Airlanding Light Regt RA. They took off from RAF Manston on the Second Lift.
They were both taken prisoner and Len ended up in Stalag 12A.
